Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
We started selling online in late 1996, but opened our original brick and mortar store on East Ann St. in 2000. We moved to N. 4th in 2006.
What is your primary product or service?
Used and rare books, with most books under $20.00. I also do appraisals for tax, donation, and insurance purposes.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I have always enjoyed books, and my background was classical history & librarianship. I was going to garage sales to find books for me, then realized I could pay for my habit by selling some to bookshops. Then the internet happened, and I began to sell directly to customers.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
We are a bit more selective by subject and by condition of the books. Our strengths are history in a broad sense (so history of Art, history of science etc.). We also have a fairly strong collection of Children's books for families, as well as some for collectors. We also have a more open shop plan, so it is easy to move around, find a place to sit etc. We are the only used & rare shop in town to host regular reading groups as well.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
Just our shop at N. 4th Ave. We have no plans to expand at this time.
Provide detailed directions to your location
If coming from the west (Kalamazoo, Chicago, etc.) or east (Detroit, Canada, etc.), follow I-94 to the Ann Arbor-Saline road exit. Turn north (right if coming from the east, left if coming from the west). That road turns into Main Street. Follow it approx. 3 miles north. The last few streets before our shop are Williams, Liberty, Washington, Huron, then Ann. Turn right (east) onto Ann, then left onto 4th Ave. We are in the middle of the block, east side. Parking is on the street, or in a lot across from our store on weekends.
What type of payments do you accept?
Visa, MC, Amex, Discover, cash, checks. We also trade books, so people can bring in books they don't want and we will give them credit toward books in the shop.
Which areas do you service?
We have customers from all over Michigan and Ohio, a few that visit us regularly from even further away. Via our website we serve every one from Russian scholars to English collectors and Japanese librarians.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
I do (Gene Alloway)
What are your hours of operation?
Monday thru Saturday 10 am - 7 p.m
