Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Part time since 1966, full time since 1983.
What is your primary product or service?
Chinese jade, porcelain and scholar's desk art. Also serious Chinese paintings.
Japanese tea ceremony items, porcelains and paintings.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Always seem to have been interested in Asian Art. I bought my first serious item on the Ginza in Tokyo in 1965.
From there, I accepted a teaching position in Southern Taiwan and began collecting Chinese art in a serious way. Of course, also studied the reading, writing and speaking the local language (Mandarin).
Later, after studying at Cambridge, UK and for a Ph.D. at the University of Michigan. Ann Arbor (specialist area China), we decided to leave the academic world for the world of Chinese and Japanese art.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
There are only a very few individuals in the United States who truly understand jade (the nephrite kind in particular which has been around for thousands of years in China). Of those few, we sincerely believe that we are among only a few who truly understand that art form in this country.
Because of our expertise in both jade, porcelain, bronzes, and scholar's desk i items, we are often asked to lecture on Chinese art across the country. As one can see, differentiating ourselves has been quite easy!
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We try out best to sell at the two remaining major shows that we presently continue to do: 1) New York and 2) Hong Kong Of course, we do have a website: www.thejadedragon.net from which we sell to both old and new clients.
